Chapter Twelve
Richard returned to the house feeling as if he understood nothing about the world.
He had not had a chance to speak to Cassandra in private, to warn her about William, though perhaps she already saw his brother for the rogue he was. Nevertheless, Richard had determined to speak with Cassandra before she was coerced by his mother to attach herself to either William or himself.
At that moment, as his feet dragged across the lawn, he knew not what he would say to Cassandra, or anyone, for that matter. After listening to Sarahâs implausible yet earnest account of her appearance in the rose garden at Covington Hall, he was not sure he could view anyone the same ever again.
Sarah was not mad; of that, he was certain. He had never heard of a person traveling through time, nor did he think any person of his acquaintance had. Was it possible? Had the Americans invented some sort of cross-era traveling conveyance?
No, that was not likely. Sarah related that she did not know how she had arrived, adding that time travel was not possible in her world, the year 2022.
By Richardâs calculations, Sarah had journeyed two-hundred and two years into the past. What had she said? Something about a male romantic lead whom he resembled. Lead in what? A play? Did she mean an actor?
He shook his head, but the movement failed to bring to order the mayhem of his thoughts. Before he realized it, he had reached the garden. Thankfully, Smythe was not there. Richard did not think he could speak about Sarah at that moment.
He entered the house and turned toward the drawing room to peer inside. To his surprise, Cassandra sat on the sofa alone, drinking tea.
âCassandra! Just the person I wished to see. Where are my mother and Delia? William? How have they left you alone?â
Cassandra colored prettily, as she often did.
âDelia has gone to arrange a room for me. Your mother went upstairs to rest, and William said he was going to the village. I wished to await your return.â
Richard closed the door behind him and turned. He crossed the room and bent down on one knee to take her hands in his.
âCassandra, my dear, I am so glad you waited to speak to me. I cannot know what my mother or Delia have said to you, or William, for that matter, but please do not pay heed to him if he pays you his addresses. Surely, you must know he is a scoundrel on a good day. You must have heard rumors about him. Why, even in the garden, he behaved abominably toward a female servant.â
âRichard!â she exclaimed. âIs that all you have to say to me? I know your brother is dreadful, and I did not wish him to accompany me, but I had no choice.â
He sighed with relief and gave her hands a shake.
âI am reassured to hear you say so.â
âAre you proposing, Richard? Is that why you are on your knees before me?â
